RRD: Buying for exclusive access? Does that make sense in an internet world?

One reason to buy is to keep a functionality away from the competition. In a global internet connected world, the money might be better spent on getting leaner, keeping fixed costs aligned with market size and improving the customer experience.

In a value chain economy this strategy might have made sense. In a user network economy, in my not so humble opinon, this leads to a dead end and waste of executive focus and shareholders money.
